Artist Profiles
Ian Scarlett
Ian has been with Karingallery since 2005. Ian’s style is very minimal; his work document observations of his surroundings with a few words or short phrases, along with a symbol or two from his repertoire of images and he has created an austere and profound work. Small line drawings of simple objects, often the more obvious images create the most startling works. For example ”you don’t drink out of shaving mugs”.
In 2009 Ian won ‘The First Encouragement Award’ of $500.00 for his painting at the Connected 09 show, Black Box Theatre in the Victorian Arts Centre. Ian’s first solo show 'Observations' was held in April 2010. This show featured 27 of Ian's recent paintings, water colour drawings and books. Once again this year Ian will be showing work in the connected10 show at Melbourne Central.
Margaret Day

Margaret came to Karingallery when it opened its door in 1997 and has had work in over 40 shows during this time.
Margaret works mainly with coloured pencil, drawing scenes of the everyday, however sometimes with a bright and bizarre twist. One recent series focused on the single spectator watching night time fireworks against a pitch black sky. There images were as bright and glaring as the fire works themselves, and always with incredible grins of red or blue. Others works have animals as the main subject. In these the eyes are large and irregular, they steal the viewer’s gaze.
Visit Karingallery at 4 James Street, Geelong VIC 3220. Gallery hours 10am to 3pm weekdays.
